Procion cold water dyes, also known as Procion MX dyes, are a type of reactive dye that are particularly effective for use on cellulose fibres such as cotton, linen, and rayon. They are named "cold water dyes" because they can be used at room temperature, unlike some dyes that require heat to activate.

Characteristics:

  • Fibre Suitability: Ideal for cellulose fibres like cotton, linen, and rayon.
  • Vibrant Colours: Known for producing bright and vivid colours.
  • Water Solubility: Soluble in water, which aids in even application.
  • Colour Fastness: Excellent wash and light fastness, as the dye chemically bonds with the fibre.

Using Procion Cold Water Dyes:

  1. Materials Needed:

    • Procion cold water dye
    • Soda ash (sodium carbonate) as a fixative
    • Salt
    • Warm water
    • Dyeing containers and utensils (not for food)
    • Protective gloves and eyewear
  2. Pre-Washing: Pre-wash the fabric to remove any impurities or finishes.

  3. Preparing the Dye Solution: Dissolve the Procion dye in warm water. The amount of dye and water depends on the fabric's weight and the desired colour intensity.

  4. Mixing the Fixative Solution: Dissolve soda ash in warm water in a separate container. This solution helps the dye to bond with the fabric.

  5. Soaking the Fabric: Soak the fabric in the soda ash solution for at least 15 minutes.

  6. Applying the Dye: Apply the dye solution to the fabric. This can be done through various methods like immersion, painting, or squirting for tie-dye effects.

  7. Curing: After applying the dye, the fabric needs to "cure" for the colour to set properly. This usually involves wrapping the fabric in plastic and leaving it in a warm place for several hours or overnight.

  8. Rinsing and Washing: Rinse the fabric in cold water until the water runs clear, then wash it in warm water with a mild detergent to remove any unreacted dye.

  9. Drying: Dry the fabric as usual.

Safety and Tips:

  • Wear gloves and protective clothing, as the dyes can stain skin and clothes.
  • Use utensils and containers that are not used for food.
  • Experiment with different techniques for unique results.
  • Dispose of dye and fixative solutions responsibly, following local regulations.

Procion cold water dyes are popular for their ease of use and the vibrant, long-lasting colours they produce, making them a favourite for projects like tie-dyeing, batik, and fabric painting.
